Glossary
What skill level is needed to do-it-yourslf?
If you are not ripping out your existing
frames (not recommended) and absent any difficulties that should be readly
apparent on initial inspection, such as obstructions or damaged or warped
frames, only low to moderate skill is needed. The windows ordered here will be
custom sized to fit easily into your existing frames.
We will be here to answer any questions you may have on ordering or installation.
What regulations do I need to be
aware of ?
You should check with your city
regarding regulations. In addition to Permit requirements, the main ones
affecting windows and doors include requirements for Safety glass (see
"What is tempered glass" below), egress from bedrooms
(fire safety), and light and ventilation minimums.
Typically, for egress each bedroom shall have one exterior exit door or one window meeting all the following requirements:
| Minimum clear opening |
| ... width |
20 inches |
| ... height |
24 inches |
| ... area (ground floor) |
5.0 sq feet |
| .....area (other floors) |
5.7 sq feet |
| maximum distance of sill from floor |
44 inches |
Typical light and ventilation minimum requirements:
| Light (glass area) |
10% of floor area |
| Ventilation (opening) |
5% of floor area |
| .. mechanical capacity |
15 cubic feet of outside air per occcupant |
Adjoining rooms can be
considered as one if the opening between them
is at least 50% of the wall that separates them |
Due to grandfather provisions: Egress, light and ventilation requirements are not a concern
when you are simply
replacing windows into their existing openings without making egress more restictive or
reducing light or ventilation. Note however, that changing a window configuration such as from
a single-hung to
a horizontal slider can in fact make egress more restrictive
even without changing the size of the overall window opening.
How do I measure?
How accurate do my measurements have to
be?
The window should be 1/4" to 1/2" less in
width and height than the opening into which it is to be installed, so there is
some tolerance on sizing.
We manufacture to the sizes selected in the pricing grid, so it is up to you to
measure the size of the opening and make the deduction necessary to enable installation.
Which brand do you recommend?
All of the windows on this site are energy
efficient high quality window with solid manufacturer's warranties, and would
make a good choice. There are some variances with configuration, features and
price that could control your decision. Near the foot of each pricing grid
there is a link to full information, and sometimes a brochure, on the current
selection.
What's the meaning those letter symbols
in each pricing grid?
Each letter stands for a single sash or
panel. Their juxdaposition shows how they lineup viewed from the outside
(looking towards the house).
In common window parlance, "X" represents a sash that opens and "O" a fixed sash.
Thus "XO" would represent a two panel horizontal slider where the left sash opens, and the righ
sash is fixed; and an "OX" a two panel horizontal slider where the left panel is fixed,
and the right one opens. An "O" above an "X" would represent a singl-hung window, the top sash "O" being
fixed and the bottom one opens. An "XOX" would be a three panel horizontal
slider where the center panel is fixed, and the two side panels slide open.
"SH" stands for Single Hung; "DH" for Double Hung
On each pricing grid as you change the configuration selection, a simle drawing
of the window will appear, in the left column, that should make the
configuration clear.
The meaning of letters not shown above should be clear from the context: Thus in
a grid for casement windows, "CO" would be a casement window where the left
sash opens, and the right sash is fixed "CC" would be a double casement where
both sashes open; A "COC" would be 3 panel casement with a fixed center panel
(or sash).
How do I get full product information?
After you have selected or changed the configuration
options (X, XO etc) then the link at the foot of the pricing grid, "Click here for product information",
and "Brochure" etc., will change its reference to reflect the current selection. These links, generally to the
manufacturer's site, will give you comprehensive information on the current selection.
Typically, this information is more detailed and complete than expected, especially if you spend
a little time on the manufacturer's site investigating.
Can I see samples of the glass
options?
One each pricing grid you will see a
link, typically "Click here for product information" or "Brochure". These are
links to the manufacturers sites where you can see glass samples. A few
samples: Delta Frost; Glue Chip; Niagara; Reed; Milgard offerings
What is "LowE"?
LowE glass is energy efficient glass, designed
to keep your home warmer in winter, and cooler in summer, with virtually no
tint to interfer with the visible light part of the light spectrum.
All windows and doors sold on this site, with LowE selected (higly recommended)
qualify as energy efficient.
What is tempered glass?
Tempered glass is several times stronger
than regular (annealed) glass, and does not break into shards that could cut
you to pieces but into pebble like pieces without sharp edges. There are
regulations that mandate safety glass in certain circumstances, such as in sliding glass doors,
windows with any panel over 9 Sq feet that is simultaneously less than 18 inches and
more than 36 inches from the floor, and windows within 24 inches of a door (or sidelights
within 12 inches).
What is annealed glass?
Regular glass.
What's the difference between
a flat and sculptured grid?
 |
 |
| flat |
sculptured |
What's the difference between
a wide and narrow grid?
A narrow grid is typically just over 1/2" wide, and wide just over an 1".
What's the difference between
block, retrofit and nailon frames ?
If you are replacing aluminium or
steel windows, choose "retrofit" [unless you are ripping out the entire frame
(not recommended), when you would choose "nailon"]. A retrofit window comes with
an exterior flange which fits over the stucco or siding to hide the remaing
aluminium or steelframe and help seal.
A Block frame window is made to fit into
an existing wood frame from which the sashes have been removed.
Ordered with "sloped sill", the bottom of the window will slope to
math the standard sill slope.
Choolse "Nailon" for new construction. It also has a flange, but unlike
retrofits, it is nailed to the studs under the stucco or exterior siding.
What is "spacer" and "Brick Mould"?
Do you have a showroom?
How long does it take for delivery?
Currently running at about 3 weeks or less.
What does shipping cost?
Currently, we are only shipping within California,
at $150.00 per shipment. However, orders over one thousand ($2,000) include free shipping.
How can I have confidence in your
company?
Can I get help on installation
if I have a problem?
Call us at (800)464-9499 or email
service@e-windowsonline.com
When do you debit my credit card?
On roder, a hold will be put on
funds pending shipment, when the hold will be funded.
What's your cancellation
policy?
On receipt of your order, we will
contact you to go over it for confirmation of its details. Once we have settled
the details and with final confirmation from you, we will submit to
manufacture, at which point the sale will be final.
Will I have less usable sill depth after
replacing single-glazed aluminium windows?
Yes, but there are some options in this
respect. Call with any conerns. A dual glazed vinyl window will typically take
about 3" to 3.5" of your sill. The spacer referred to in the frame choices of
the CertaiTeed window, pulls the window out to give about 1/2" more sill space.
Do You do Plan take-offs?
Yes, if you get a copy of the plans to us.
